Odder than Artifice!

Hi everyone! I hope you all enjoy the first strip of Odder than Artifice. Feel free to send me some feedback. Odder than Artifice and all of its characters are © 2008 by Deena Salzman.

That's just... they... *sigh*
Today, Skeeve found (and shared with us through the joy of TKOP Chat (which, if you haven't been hanging out in, you totally SHOULD be!)) a site called Not Always Right - a database along the lines of the infamous Overheard in New York, dedicated to the long-suffering members of all sorts of industries. Pretty much any one that involves a worker/customer relationship.

I have worked in retail. I have worked in foodservice, I have worked in tech support, I have worked in a bookstore. There is one common factor that I found in these seemingly disparate positions, that sites like that, and the livejournal community that goes by the delicate name of "customerssuck", strongly uphold.

Somewhere, somehow, It seems to get lost on people in the "customer" half of the Customer/worker dichotomy that the worker is, in fact, a person. Thoughts, feelings, stresses, etc. Workers cannot be held responsible for signage, corporate policies, or other things quite obviously not under their own control. Yet through some weird sense of I-am-right-serve-me-now mentality of groundless entitlement, customers more and more often use the workers as punching bags for their own unique brands of stupidity or worse, abuse.

Rise up, end it today! "How?" you ask me.

"Easy," I say.

Don't be a jackass when you're out shopping. Tip well. Smile, and meet someone's eye.

You never know how much a difference a sincere thank you can make in someone's day, until you're on the receiving end of it.

Handful of dead presidents:
Money... Makes... The... World.. Go... 'Round.

Interesting that presidents day conjures up so many sales, but the bank, repositories of all those portraits of our founding fathers (And other freak'os) are closed today.

No money. No new car/furniture/big screen teevee. Natch.

It's ok. I spent the day at work, went out for lunch and then drove home and ordered some pizza. That's going to become my new way of celebrating "President's Day."

Hope you had a good one, too.

Love isn't. Love is.
Love is:

Puppies
Window frost
sharing
flowers
cards for no reason
cards for very good reason
that half hour of snuggling in the morning between the time you first hit the snooze button and the time you actually get up
Cherishing time together
appreciating time apart
mingling DNA
coffee and bacon
mutual journal/socialnetworking friending
little jokes that make everyone else look at you funny
long walks with no destination
new music that gets under your skin
learning
teaching
steamy hot cocoa
chocolate stout cake
a book so good it demands immediate rereading
twists that make your breath catch
a cat in slanty sunbeams
nicknames
completion
XKCD
hot bubbly baths
trust
plastic rings
Giraffes and Elephants

and TKOP.

Two weeks off...
So, my boss is away for two weeks... While I love the woman, she exudes a personal stress that when it's not there you really realize it. So, while she's having 2 weeks off, so am I in a way. It's a good time to kind of get my groove back on before she gets back.

This is also the week that brings out the lovey dovey or the snarky arky in those around you. Some people really like Valentines day, and some... Well, not so much. I got a valentine from one of my co-workers already... A self inflating balloon in a bag that pops when you smack it. It was... Amusing. I'm going to try to spoil my Bliss as much as I can on the day, as I love to celebrate it, but I'm not going into details.. Muhahahah.

In other news, it looks like I'll be going in to get tested to see what, exactly, I'm allergic to... I know I have an allergy to Walnuts... But this is because I've had some coughing issues at night for the last few years. So, a full workup on my allergies is now forthcoming according to my Dr.

Ok, for now, have a good week, and see you on the other side.

Zero's Friday Five
I missed last week. Man... What a weird thing that was. Didn't even notice until Saturday. That's the last time I do meth with Version2PT0. Anywho... Been playing Rock Band a lot. So, with that in mind, I give you five great songs that should be in either Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but are (as of yet) not.

1. "I'm Ugly And I Don't Know Why" by: Butt Trumpet - A beautiful ballad, sung by a tiny voiced girl who recalls her grade school crush and the girl whose ass she had to kick to win his heart.

2. "Dead Grammas On A Train" by: Thin White Rope - It's got a country flair with a grimy guitar and even grimier lyrics.

3. "Afternoons and Coffee Spoons" by: Crash Test Dummies - Someday I'll wear pajamas in the day time, and on that day, I'll play Rock Band in those very same PJs.

4. "Burning Inside" by: Ministry - God save the pretend drummer who plays this on Expert level.

5. "Startin' Up A Posse" by: Anthrax - Possibly the dirtiest song ever written about censorship.

Taxes Are Taxing and Full of Strange Syntax*
Monday night we did our taxes - which is to say that we plugged lots of numbers culled from half a bazillion pieces of oddly labeled paper into a tax program that would be expensive if we weren't doing it online and thereby able to tell it to take the cost of itself out of the final total.

Every year, things get more complicated; marriage, job changes, spawn, housing acquisition. Everything seems to alter that final number that we so eagerly go in search of - some up, some down.

In a lot of ways, doing the tax return is a reflection of a year past and the way what happened within it reflects upon our future in a way that livejournal memes and personal resolutions don't quite seem to achieve.

I am the mayor of simpleton...
Well, January is finally wrapped and here we are in the shortest cruelest month of the year. The month of ice and heartbreak. The month of slush and infidelity. The month of... Eh, I can't keep it up. But this year, February will be long. For the year that leaps has arrived! You get an extra day to enjoy the extra 6 more weeks that Puxatany Phil predicted for us. (Thanks Rodent!) The good pot is that I get 3 damn pay checks this months, so wheee.

Ok, we're off to the races for this February, so... Don't screw it up.

; )
